Multimodal Therapy (02:35)

FREE PREVIEW

It is imperative for professionals to draw on a wide range of disciplines. Covering seven basic modalities results in comprehensive treatment—behavior, affect, sensation, imagery, cognition, interpersonal relationships, and neurophysiological processes. The MMT model is based on two basic assumptions.

Self-Awareness (06:42)

Kathy describes herself as closed. She reflects on the death of her husband, their marriage before his death, and how she has changed. Dr. Arnold Lazarus questions why Kathy did not express her needs.

Behavior, Affect, Imagery (13:46)

MMT modalities interface with one another. Kathy and Lazarus discuss behavioral changes, feelings and sensations to increase and decrease, and images associated with Kathy's husband.

Cognition and Interpersonal Relationships (14:35)

Lazarus leads Kathy in exercises that address permission, acquiescence, and assertiveness; therapy is safe, but the real world has consequences. We can control our emotions. Kathy discusses expressing her anger.

Lazarus's Session Summary (03:48)

Kathy is an acquiescent woman who does not express her true feelings. Lazarus reflects on Kathy's behavior, her feelings of guilt, and areas of focus for future sessions.

Kathy's Session Summary (03:36)

Kathy describes how she is feeling after attending sessions with Dr. Rogers, Dr. Shostrom, and Lazarus. She reflects on their styles of therapy and the sequence of the sessions.
