Over the last 30 years, approximately 50% of the Great Barrier Reef's coral cover has died. This segment orients viewers to the declining reef and the debate over coal mining.

Great Barrier Reef (03:18)

Dr. Allen Dobrovolsky's studies indicate the reef is nearing an environmental disaster. Lack of cooperation among societal groups inhibits improving the reef's health. Politicians argue about causes and responsibility.

Gladstone, Queensland (07:44)

The world's fourth largest coal port exports liquefied natural gas. Harbor development releases contaminated sediment into the water, harming marine life. Experts reflect on environmental impact assessments and corporate tactics.

Water Quality Degradation (03:29)

Bob McCosker has not seen negative impacts from dredging at his sea turtle rehabilitation center. Dr. Jon Brodie's research contradicts the claim. Dr. Liam Wagner discusses the economic impact of harbor development in Gladstone.

Coal Mining Ports (05:14)

Many companies want leases to build coal mines in Queensland. Abbot Point would need to expand; locals are divided over development. Governments try to balance economic and environmental benefits of the Great Barrier Reef.

Government Response to Reef Health (05:14)

Parliament members continuously interrupt Sen. Waters' testimony; Prof. Terry Hughes reflects on dismissive attitudes. Government officials use jobs and growth as arguments against mining and energy sector reforms; they argue climate change and carbon taxation,

World Heritage Committee Meeting (04:27)

Jon Day wants to increase public awareness of Great Barrier Reef concerns; the Australian government must meet resourcing challenges. Greg Hunt defends reef management and UNESCO does not list the reef as endangered. Hunt approves the Abbot Point coal port expansion.

Adani Carmichael Mine (03:37)

Wagner believes the expansion project is not economically viable and environmental impacts are catastrophic. Parliament members push for development. Oil companies have vested interest in changing governance frameworks.

Urannah (06:40)

A main mining infrastructure corridor runs through the heart of Birri Gubba country. Elder Kenny Dodds discusses the Urannah Dam and the significance of the river to the Birri people. Protestors fill the streets outside Adani headquarters.

Coral Bleaching (03:51)

In 2016, warm waters trigger a massive event that kills large areas of coral; a second event the following year results in a 50% loss of the reef. Parliament members mock Sen. Whish-Wilson and Hughes.

Funding Environmental Protection (04:11)

In 2018, the government allocates funds to a foundation with links to the mining sector. See a portion of the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee meeting. Dobrovolsky reflects on the future of the Great Barrier Reef.

Description

Murder on the Reef follows the hotly debated issues surrounding the world's largest living structure, the Great Barrier Reef. But is it too late? Many scientists now believe as much as fifty percent of the corals in the Great Barrier Reef have died. Through a complex mix of voices from locals, to scientists and indigenous spokespeople, this documentary traces the many culprits including water contamination, crown-of-thorns starfish, and dredging. But the elephant in the room is climate change and some of the exhausted scientists believe the fight is futile. Politicians supported by big coal continue their assault on the science. Australia is the largest exporter of coal which is the largest contributor to emissions and one of the biggest financial contributors to political parties.
