In this program, Benoît Mandelbrot takes us on a chaotic "guided tour" through Paris and a number of U.S. locations. He explains his ideas and theories by using ordinary objects and occurrences as examples, inviting viewers to look more closely at the universe of irregular and incomplete shapes that surround us—a universe that, at first glance, seems unstructured and chaotic but, with a little guidance, reveals an order all its own. Mandelbrot, through his lucid narrative, possesses the rare gift of making complex issues simple and comprehensible; like many geniuses, he finds what he has discovered obvious, and his talent as a teacher lets us join in discovering the obviousness of fractal geometry.
