Driven by ingenious inventions such as the Newcomen steam engine, the spinning jenny, and the flying shuttle, mass production took England by storm. At the same time, the globe-trotting expeditions of Captain James Cook did more than chart exotic lands—they also demonstrated the economic benefits of setting up plantations in far-flung colonies to feed the growing industrial sector with raw materials, laying the groundwork for today’s global economy.
