CBS Reports: The Homosexuals

In a survey conducted for this special in 1967, a majority of Americans considered homosexuality more harmful to society than adultery, abortion, or prostitution. In this program, CBS News correspondent Mike Wallace presents the dilemma of gay men at that time: regarded as sick by the medical profession, criminals to the law, shunned by employers, and rejected by heterosexual society. In addition to conducting extended interviews with several gay men, Wallace sounds out the opinions of the police, the courts, and the church. For a cultural perspective, the comments of social critic and Columbia professor Albert Goldman are intercut with those of writer Gore Vidal to provide a portrait of a society reassessing its values.
