As the owner of Italy’s most valuable investment portfolio, the Catholic Church earns vast sums of money—but its coffers are cloaked in mystery and few people outside the Vatican understand its finances. Meanwhile, the November 2011 appointment of Prime Minister Mario Monti, an economist and former European Union technocrat, saw the introduction of broad austerity measures across the country. In the midst of such turmoil, it was perhaps only natural for some Italians to call for a new era of transparency regarding the Church. This program enters the labyrinth of the papal treasury and assesses the claims of those who want its extensive holdings taxed as well as monitored. Viewers meet Deputy Finance Minister Vittorio Grilli, the government official responsible for implementing much of Italy’s austerity programs, who sheds further light on the “untouchable” status of the Church and whether or not it should change.
